Baklavaji

This is going to be my last Food Post for awhile, unless, I'm the one who is making the food. For the past couple of weeks I've been passing by a newly opened store called Baklavaji. After trying the Baklava in Turkey last January, very light and sweet, unlike the Lebanese and Syrian Baklava which is a bit more nutty and has more layers of filo pastry, I really wanted to try it. So I decided to stop last week and went in. The display cabinets were not fully stocked because from what I was told they restock around 2.30pm when people are out from work and stop to get something sweet on the way home. I got what was already available, a selection pistachio Baklava and I couldn’t wait to reach the office and try them. It was as good as the ones I tried in Turkey. I really recommend their Baklava.
They restock at 2.30pm.. the best time to get freshly made
baklava!
I liked the long ones with pistachio and the little round ones.
The ones on the right side wasn't that bad.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Kinney's popular Web comic, which began in 2004, makes its way to print as a laugh-out-loud "novel in cartoons," adapted from the series. Middle school student Greg Heffley takes readers through an academic year's worth of drama. Greg's mother forces him to keep a diary ("I know what it says on the cover, but when Mom went out to buy this thing I specifically told her to get one that didn't say 'diary' on it"), and in it he loosely recounts each day's events, interspersed with his comic illustrations. Kinney has a gift for believable preteen dialogue and narration (e.g., "Don't expect me to be all 'Dear Diary' this and 'Dear Diary' that"), and the illustrations serve as a hilarious counterpoint to Greg's often deadpan voice. The hero's utter obliviousness to his friends and family becomes a running joke. For instance, on Halloween, Greg and his best friend, Rowley, take refuge from some high school boys at Greg's grandmother's house; they taunt the bullies, who then T.P. her house. Greg's journal entry reads, "I do feel a little bad, because it looked like it was gonna take a long time to clean up. But on the bright side, Gramma is retired, so she probably didn't have anything planned for today anyway." Kinney ably skewers familiar aspects of junior high life, from dealing with the mysteries of what makes someone popular to the trauma of a "wrestling unit" in gym class. His print debut should keep readers in stitches, eagerly anticipating Greg's further adventures. From amazon.com

I wanted Abdulaziz to improve his English. While we were at Border in Oman, I asked him to pick up some books. He got some comics and a book called "Diary of A Wimpy Kid". I didn't like the title, and didn't like the fact it had more illustrations in it, however after reading it with him. I can say it was very funny and enjoyable to read. Last weekend, we stopped at Jareer because I was looking for some books and asked Abdulaziz to pick up another book so we can read over the break. After few minutes he rushed towards where I was browsing carrying a boxed set of the Diary of a Wimpy Kids series. He was really excited that he found more books about the series. It cost KD15, a bit pricy, but I didn't mind since he really enjoys reading it. As soon as we got back home he went through the illustrations in the four books, but then later that evening we started reading it together. When there were words he didn't know their definition, he underlines them and the next day he can check out their meaning on www.dictionary.com . As much as I wanted him to use a regular dictionary, I know he would look up those words if he used a regular dictionary. I highly recommend this book, for boisterous preteen boys, who you want them to sit for thirty minutes to read.

Friday Pasta: Lorenzo

Salhiya
It was one of those lazy days, when even the boys weren't in the mood to go out, and the help had the day off. "So, are you going to cook something or are we eating out?" Fahad asked me. I wanted to cook, it has been a while I didn't cook anything, but I felt lazy. "I guess we're eating out." I replied. Abdulaziz protested. He was busy playing a game on his computer with his friends. "Nah! Your eyes need a break from the computer." I tell him and pull him from where he was sitting and send him away to change, threatening if he didn't do so and very quick, I'll confiscate the computer for the rest of the break. Ahmed had no problem. He was excited to get out of the house and was expressing it by jumping from one sofa to the other and from one arm chair to the other until he scared the life out of me when he toppled from the arm chair. Now we're ready, we get in the car, I'm driving, and Fahad curiously looks at me. "Have you decided where we're going?" I nodded, smiling. "Lorenzo. It has been awhile we haven't been there, and I'm craving Roberto's pasta." "Roberto isn't here."
Roberto is an Italian restaurant owner and chef, who fed us the best Pasta and Italian cuisine I've ever had in my life! "I know! That's why we're going to Lorenzo!" I reply a bit exasperated. Gee! Men! On the way, I explain to the boys we're going to Lorenzo which serves Italian Food. You know I'm one of those mother's who is a bit neurotic (well not a bit but I try to ease on them a little), and want my boys to be the perfect little gentlemen they are and know about everything. "Bas mama! You're boring me!" Abdulziz finally snaps. Ok. So I shut up for the rest of the drive. Salhiya Plaza was practically empty. Only few families here and there and the weather was a bit windy. I wanted to sit inside, but Fahad thought it was better if we stayed out, knowing the boys, they wouldn't sit still and would want to run around the fountain. Of course he was right.
As usual, the service was impeccable and the food exquisite, and the weather held until the end. Hence, we had a wonderful meal. Even the boys enjoyed their food and didn't move until they were full and done with their meal. As soon as the sun went down, it grew more windy and cold. We felt too full for desert, so we ordered chocolate cheese cake slice to go.

My order, Trio Pasta. All three pastas are very delicious.

It was a bit too much for me so I shared some with Fahad and

the boys.

Fahad's order, breaded chicken fillet and fries, I shared

with him some of my pasta.

Abdulaziz's order Lorenzo's Lasagna, the best ever!

Ahmed's Alfredo with mushrooms and chicken in Penne.

It was so yummy!

Back!

I know I haven't been posting much lately. Since my return I've been swept in a whirlwind of work and family obligations. Even my besties are complaining they haven't seen me since my return. The craziness of the "New Season" has started earlier than usual. When I say "New Season" I mean by the season when the weather starts to warm up and the demand on ice cream increases. Not that we haven't been doing well in winter, al7amdullah, even when the weather was cold we've been selling ice cream. Thus, inshallah we'll be introducing an array of new flavors, new products and themes at Gelato Italiano. So I hope beyond hope everything will go on smoothly and as planned. The boys have been occupying the second half of my day. Abdulaziz has a new teacher, only this teacher has started the curriculum from the beginning because after giving them an assessment test, they were not within the required level. So go figures! What level was he expecting when the class had three different teachers and I do not know how man substitute teachers from September to December. And my boys lives has been disrupted from my absence. Not that my sisters didn't do a great job, but they didn't follow the rules of the daily routine and everything was in a mess when I got back and took me almost ten days to get them to get used to my drum beat. Yes, I'm a tyrant! I've been reading a lot. By the end of the day, when the boys are tucked in bed, and I reach the "tetnee7" level, the only way I de-stress is by opening a book and get sucked into the story I'm reading. I've been reading a lot of business books too "yuck!" only because Fahad scolds me and says I do not read things that would benefit me. I've been reading a lot of posts from blogs I follow, unfortunately there is something wrong with my computer which is preventing me from posting any comments on some blogs. I need to get it fixed. Inshallah after the break. So I hope I'll be posting more in the next few days.
